Our 2023 graduation was a festive occasion as alumni, sponsors, and supporters joined together to celebrate our graduates.
Mary Spellman, Board Vice President, kicked off the ceremony by thanking the many alumni and board members in attendance, including founder Greg Apodaca and first LP class alums Roberta Martinez, Phlunte Riddle, and Martha Shenkenberg. Judy Chu, U.S. Representative for California’s 28th District, spoke to the important work LP leaders do for our community. All told, a strong community presence showcased our shared commitment to positive change. Carolina Caro, LP Facilitator and Leadership Coach, remarked on the amazing work of this graduating cohort. Their growth, insights, and dedication to their community were evident throughout their group project presentations. Sara Goldman, class speaker, summed up the LP experience by recalling the famous quote by Mr. Rogers to look for the helpers. Sara said “… that really struck me as true, especially in this experience, because we are surrounded by a cohort, by an organization, and by an entire community of helpers. Caring people who have dedicated themselves to improving the lives of those around them.” Heartfelt appreciation was given to Johanna Atienza, our outgoing Board President, for her invaluable contributions and leadership. And a warm welcome was given to Amara Ononiwu as she steps into the vital role of being our next president. At the end of the event, almost $9,000 was raised not only to support our ongoing efforts, but to begin building a more robust LP Alumni Network. More information about the Alumni Network will be shared in the coming months. Looking ahead, LP is excited to announce that Nancy Carol Inguanzo, a board member, and Karen Burgess, a LP alum, will lead the next cohort of community leaders in 2024. Our deepest gratitude to our sponsors, partners, and all who have supported LP for nurturing leadership which is so vital to the growth of our community. Congratulations Class of 2023! You represent the best of Leadership Pasadena and we are so excited to see what you will do next. |
